Treehouse retreats: Sleeping among the treetops

Imagine waking up to the sound of birds chirping and the gentle rustling of leaves. That’s exactly what you can expect when you stay in a treehouse retreat. Nestled high up in the branches of trees, these accommodations offer a tranquil and immersive experience in nature.

Treehouse retreats come in all shapes and sizes, ranging from simple and rustic to luxurious and extravagant. Some are located in dense forests, allowing you to truly disconnect from the outside world and reconnect with nature. Others offer modern amenities and panoramic views, providing a perfect blend of comfort and natural beauty.

One of the most famous treehouse retreats is the Treehotel in Sweden. This collection of uniquely designed treehouses offers guests a chance to experience the Swedish wilderness in style. From the Mirrorcube, which reflects its surroundings, to the UFO, which looks like a spaceship hovering in the trees, each treehouse at the Treehotel is a work of art.

Staying in a treehouse retreat is not just about the accommodations themselves, but also about the experience they offer. Imagine falling asleep to the gentle sway of the trees and waking up to breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. Whether you’re looking for a romantic getaway or a family adventure, a treehouse retreat is sure to leave you in awe.

Underwater hotels: Exploring the depths of the ocean

If you’ve ever dreamed of sleeping with the fishes, then staying in an underwater hotel is the perfect choice for you. These unique accommodations allow you to immerse yourself in the underwater world and get up close and personal with marine life.

Staying in an underwater hotel is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Imagine waking up to the sight of colourful fish swimming by your window and the gentle sway of the ocean. You can spend your days snorkelling or scuba diving, exploring the coral reef and discovering the incredible biodiversity that lies beneath the surface. I know this is how I would spend my time there.

One of the most famous underwater hotels is the Conrad Maldives Rangali Island. Located in the Maldives, this luxury resort offers guests the chance to stay in an underwater suite called the Muraka. The Muraka features a bedroom submerged 16 feet below the surface, providing panoramic views of the vibrant coral reef and its inhabitants.

Side note: I am currently this close to having enough Hilton Honors points for a 2-night stay at Conrad Maldives Rangali Island 🤩 I don’t necessarily want the underwater room, but dining in their underwater restaurant has been on my travel bucket list FOREVER. I can’t wait to finally experience it. I’ll definitely write a review post once I have so stay tuned.

While underwater hotels may not be suitable for everyone, these unique places to stay are a perfect choice for those seeking adventure and a unique perspective on the natural world. I’m a water baby so this is a dream of mine. If you’re ready to dive into an unforgettable experience, consider staying in an underwater hotel on your next trip.

Cave dwellings: Experiencing life underground

If you tend to get claustrophobic, you might want to skip this one. But for those who crave a truly unique and ancient experience, staying in a cave dwelling is the perfect choice. These accommodations offer a glimpse into the past and allow you to experience life underground.

Cave dwellings can be found in various parts of the world, each with its own unique charm and history. From the ancient cave dwellings of Cappadocia in Turkey to the troglodyte villages in France, these accommodations offer a chance to step back in time and immerse yourself in a different world.

One of the most famous cave-dwelling accommodations is the Sextantio Le Grotte della Civita in Italy. Located in the UNESCO World Heritage site of Matera, this hotel features 18th-century cave dwellings that have been transformed into luxurious suites. Staying in one of these cave dwellings provides a truly unique and immersive experience, allowing you to sleep in a room carved out of stone and surrounded by history.

Staying in a cave dwelling is not just about the accommodations themselves, but also about the rich history and culture that surrounds them. You can explore ancient cave churches, visit local museums, and sample traditional cuisine, all while immersing yourself in the unique atmosphere of these underground accommodations.

Ice and snow hotels: Embracing the winter wonderland

If you’re a fan of winter and all things snow and ice, staying in an ice and snow hotel is a unique place to stay that you might love. These accommodations offer a chance to embrace the winter wonderland and sleep in rooms made entirely of ice and snow.

One of the most famous ice and snow hotels is the Icehotel in Sweden. Every year, this hotel is rebuilt from scratch using ice and snow from the nearby Torne River. Each room is a unique work of art, carved by skilled artists from around the world.

Staying in the Icehotel allows you to sleep in a room made entirely of ice, surrounded by intricate ice sculptures and illuminated by the soft glow of ice lanterns.

While staying in an ice and snow hotel may not be for everyone, it offers a chance to experience the magic and beauty of winter in a truly unique way. You can go ice sculpting, take a snowmobile ride, or even try your hand at dog sledding. And at the end of the day, you can cozy up in a warm sleeping bag and fall asleep in a room made entirely of ice.

Editor’s note: I stayed at L’Hôtel de Glace in Quebec City and while I didn’t love the experience, I can see the appeal. After all, I did stay there! I was cold and didn’t sleep well so I will offer the advice of visiting one of these hotels for a tour, but sleeping elsewhere if you tend to get cold easily.

The royal treatment: Sleep like Kings and Queens in a castle

And finally, I have to end with a stay in a castle because it’s one of the more popular unique places to stay and it’s on most people’s bucket lists. It was on mine.

You can read about my experience here – Spend the night in a Bavarian Castle. Spoiler alert: that’s it below and it was pretty epic!

Sleeping in a castle is a fabulous and unique place to stay

If you’re looking for a complete vacation and not just an overnight experience, I’ve got you covered. I know first-hand how much work planning a trip can be and sometimes it’s nice for somebody else to do the leg work.

Global guided vacation company, Trafalgar, incorporates accommodations with historical significance, such as castlees, on select trips to extend daytime discoveries into overnight immersion. Having toured around France and its stunning castles, I recommend their Best of France Tour with a stay at Chateâu de Beauvois

This 17th-century chateau, situated in the French countryside, was once one of King Louis XIII’s favourite destinations for hunting trips. Adorned with a traditional French interior, this stay neighbours the Chateau de Villandry, where King Philip II of France once met Richard I of England to discuss peace and where the bordering world-famous Renaissance gardens bloom.

Fun fact: I lived abroad and studied at a university in the Loire Valley of France. It is stunning! The castles and their gardens are meticulously kept and beyond photo-worthy. While I didn’t stay at a castle in France, I did visit several and highly recommend visiting them.

Bonus unique place to stay – almost castles

A close second to staying in an authentic castle is to stay at a Fairmont hotel. The Fairmont Hotel Vancouver calls itself the ‘castle in the city’ and the Chateau Frontenac in Quebec City (pictured below) looks like a castle inside and out.

The Empress in Victoria, which is the feature image for this post, also looks and feels like a castle. While the rooms are modern, you don’t get an authentic castle experience, but sometimes luxury is what we need, amiright?! You won’t be disappointed with a stay at any of The Fairmont’s castle-like hotels.

I have had the pleasure of staying at several of them, my favourite being the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise. The views of the lake are incredible. While the rooms are pricey, you don’t have the expensive European airfare to pay, so if you can splurge, do it!
