Raise a Glass to National White Wine Day!
Three years ago, I would never have written this post. I hadn’t yet begun my exploration into the world of white and rosé wines. You could certainly say that a lot has changed over the past three years. My white wine journey began during a trip to Summerland wineries.
Since then, I’ve delved into the world of all wine, not just my favoured red wines. In this post, you’ll discover the best pairing tips and trends to elevate your celebration with delightful sips and bites.
The Health Benefits of White Wine

You know I love wine, but I’m also a wellness travel coach. So, before we get into wine pairings and cocktail recipes, let’s celebrate the fact that wine can actually be healthy for us. Yes, really!
Wine, even white wine, when enjoyed in moderation, can offer a variety of health benefits. One of the most significant advantages is its potential for heart health. Studies have shown that the antioxidants found in white wine, such as flavonoids and resveratrol, can help reduce the risk of heart disease.
These compounds work by improving cholesterol levels, reducing inflammation, and preventing the formation of blood clots. By incorporating a glass of white wine into your routine, you might be taking a step towards a healthier heart.
Another notable benefit of white wine is its potential to support lung health. Research suggests that moderate white wine consumption may enhance lung function and protect against respiratory diseases. This is believed to be due to the antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties of the wine.
White wine also contains compounds that may support cognitive health. The antioxidants present in white wine can help protect brain cells from damage caused by free radicals, which are unstable molecules that can contribute to cognitive decline.
Additionally, some studies have indicated that moderate wine consumption may be linked to a reduced risk of developing conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease. As you celebrate National White Wine Day, you can take comfort in knowing that your enjoyment of white wine might also be benefiting your brain.
All of these incredible scientific benefits aside, I truly believe that wine is good for us because of its social benefits. I love nothing more than meeting my friends for happy hour and chatting, laughing, and slurping oysters over a shared bottle of wine.
I’ll raise a glass and cheers to all of wine’s benefits 🥂
Popular Varieties of White Wine

The world of white wine is incredibly diverse, offering a wide array of flavours and styles to suit any palate.
Chardonnay
One of the most popular varieties is Chardonnay, known for its versatility and broad range of flavours. While I’m not a fan, it’s a favoured wine by many.
Chardonnay can be found in both oaked and unoaked versions. The former offers rich, buttery notes and the latter showcases crisp, fruity characteristics. This adaptability makes Chardonnay a favourite among wine enthusiasts and a perfect choice for various occasions.
Sauvignon Blanc
Sauvignon Blanc is another beloved white wine variety, celebrated for its refreshing acidity and vibrant flavours. Originating from the Bordeaux region of France, Sauvignon Blanc has become a global favourite, with notable expressions from New Zealand, California, and Chile.
My current favourite Sauvignon Blanc wines hail from New Zealand. This wine often features notes of green apple, lime, and tropical fruits. This makes it an excellent choice for those who enjoy a zesty and invigorating sip.
Riesling
Riesling is a white wine variety that offers a unique balance of sweetness and acidity. Often associated with Germany, Riesling can range from bone-dry to lusciously sweet, catering to a wide range of preferences. During a recent trip to South Australia, I discovered that I prefer their Riesling to the German ones. This is why it’s important to sample wine from different regions. They are not all the same, not at all.
Its characteristic notes of honey, apricot, and citrus make it a delightful choice for those who appreciate a wine with complexity and elegance. Whether you’re enjoying a dry Riesling with a seafood dish or a sweet Riesling with dessert, this versatile wine is sure to impress.
White Wine Blends
Many wines are a blend of several grapes. A recent bottle I tried was Narrative White 2025, which consists of equal parts Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, and Pinot Auxerrois. It was fruit-forward but had a savoury herbaceousness. It was the perfect patio sipper.
And these are just a few of the popular varieties you can enjoy on National White Wine Day. We don’t have enough time or space here to delve into Picpoul, Viognier, Pinot Gris, Pinot Grigio, Gewürztraminer, and the list goes on. I hope that with the few I’ve mentioned, I’ve inspired you to sample a new bottle (or two).
Tips for Selecting Quality White Wines
Choosing the right white wine can be an art form, but with a few tips, you can confidently select a bottle that suits your taste and occasion. One of the first things to consider is the region of origin. Certain regions are renowned for producing exceptional white wines, and knowing these can guide your choices.
For example, Burgundy in France is famous for its Chardonnay, while the Marlborough region in New Zealand is celebrated for its Sauvignon Blanc. I call this my ‘gateway white’ as it was the first white wine that I tried and liked. It gave me the confidence—and curiosity—to step outside my comfort zone of red wine and try more whites.
Another important factor to consider is the vintage of the wine. The vintage refers to the year the grapes were harvested, and it can significantly impact the wine’s flavour and quality. Generally, wines from favourable growing conditions will produce better vintages.
It’s a good idea to research the best vintages for specific wine regions. For example, a 2015 German Riesling is widely regarded as an excellent choice due to the favourable weather conditions that year.
Reading wine labels can also provide valuable information when selecting a quality white wine. Look for details such as the grape variety, region, and producer. Additionally, many labels will include tasting notes, which can give you an idea of the wine’s flavour profile.
Don’t be afraid to seek recommendations from knowledgeable staff at wine shops or sommeliers at restaurants. Their expertise can help you discover hidden gems and ensure you select a wine that meets your preferences. I love asking a sommelier for a recommendation when I want to make sure my wine pairing will complement my meal.
British Columbia Wines
I’d be remiss not to mention the wines local to me, especially since I included a few of them in my book, 100 Things to Do in Vancouver Before You Die. I am blessed to live within a day’s drive of three different wine regions.
Langley Wineries
Langley may be best known for its Fraser Valley farmland, but it’s also home to a growing wine scene that offers a relaxed and approachable tasting experience just a short drive from Vancouver.
The region’s mild coastal climate and fertile soils support a variety of cool-climate grapes, making it an ideal destination for discovering handcrafted wines without venturing far from the city. Langley is about an hour’s drive east of Vancouver.
Langley wineries are particularly known for producing crisp Pinot Gris, Bacchus, Siegerrebe, Ortega, and Gewürztraminer, along with refreshing blends that showcase the region’s bright fruit and lively acidity.
Many wineries are small, family-owned operations where visitors can enjoy intimate tastings, vineyard views, and locally inspired food pairings, making Langley a hidden gem for white wine lovers.

Okanagan Valley Wines
The Okanagan Valley has earned an international reputation for producing exceptional cool-climate white wines. Thanks to warm, sunny days, cool evenings, and a diverse range of soils, the region creates wines with vibrant acidity, bright fruit flavours, and excellent balance.
You will find everything from crisp, refreshing whites to rich, complex styles that pair beautifully with the region’s farm-to-table cuisine.
While you’ll discover many varietals throughout the valley, the Okanagan is particularly known for aromatic Riesling, expressive Gewürztraminer, crisp Pinot Gris, and elegant Chardonnay. Sauvignon Blanc is also gaining recognition, offering fresh citrus and herbaceous notes that are perfect for summer sipping.
Whether you prefer a zesty, mineral-driven wine or something with a little more body and texture, there’s an Okanagan white wine to suit every palate.

Vancouver Island Wines
Vancouver Island has quietly become one of Canada’s most exciting cool-climate wine regions, with a growing reputation for producing elegant, food-friendly white wines.
Influenced by the Pacific Ocean, the island enjoys a long growing season with mild temperatures that help grapes develop fresh acidity and delicate, nuanced flavours. It’s the perfect setting for wines that are crisp, refreshing, and incredibly versatile.
The island is best known for Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, Bacchus, Ortega, and Gewürztraminer, all of which thrive in the region’s maritime climate. You’ll also find beautifully balanced Chardonnay and vibrant Sparkling Wines, many crafted using the traditional method.
Whether you’re enjoying fresh West Coast seafood, local cheeses, or simply relaxing on a sunny patio, Vancouver Island’s white wines offer a true taste of the Pacific Northwest. There are plenty of local BC wines to choose from to celebrate National White Wine Day.

Perfect Food Pairings for White Wine

Pairing white wine with food can elevate your dining experience, enhancing the flavours of both the wine and the dish. One classic pairing is Chardonnay with seafood. The buttery and rich notes of an oaked Chardonnay complement the delicate flavours of seafood dishes such as lobster, crab, and scallops.
For a lighter option, try an unoaked Chardonnay with grilled fish or a fresh seafood salad. The crisp and fruity characteristics of the wine will enhance the natural flavours of the seafood. Just because I don’t like Chardonnay doesn’t mean I can’t recommend it to others.
Sauvignon Blanc is a versatile wine that pairs well with a variety of dishes. Its high acidity and vibrant flavours make it an excellent match for goat cheese, salads with tangy vinaigrettes, and dishes featuring herbs like basil, mint, and cilantro.
For a refreshing and satisfying pairing, try Sauvignon Blanc with a plate of fresh oysters (my fave!) or a zesty ceviche. The wine’s citrusy notes will complement the briny and tangy flavours of the seafood.
Riesling’s balance of sweetness and acidity makes it an ideal pairing for spicy dishes. The wine’s natural sweetness can help temper the heat of spicy foods, while its acidity keeps the flavours lively and refreshing.
Try pairing a slightly sweet Riesling with Thai or Indian cuisine, such as a spicy curry or a dish featuring chilli peppers. The combination of flavours will create a harmonious and enjoyable dining experience. Whatever your making for dinner on National White Wine Day, there’s a wine that will pair well with it.
White Wine Cocktails: Creative Mixology Ideas

White wine is not only delightful on its own but also serves as a fantastic base for creative cocktails. All one has to do it scroll Instagram or TikTok for the latest crazy trends (Jalapeño Sauvignon Blanc, anyone?!) Yes, I tried this one with Blasted Church Sauvignon Blanc and was pleasantly surprised. See for yourself in a Reel here.
The latest trend is pickles in white wine, but I haven’t tried that one yet. If I do, I will update this post with the video, but I wouldn’t hold my breath on that one ;)
White Wine Spritz
Adding random accoutrements aside, the classic White Wine Spritzer is a popular option. It combines white wine with soda water and a splash of citrus. This light and refreshing cocktail is perfect for warm weather and can be easily customized with your favourite fruits and herbs.
I’ll do this when a wine is a bit too sweet for me. There is rarely a bad bottle of wine that can’t be fixed with a few ingredients. Try adding slices of cucumber, mint, or berries for a unique twist.
Sparkling French 75
For a more sophisticated option, try a French 75 with a white wine twist. Traditionally made with gin, lemon juice, and champagne, this cocktail can be adapted by using a crisp and bubbly sparkling white wine in place of the champagne.
Perfect for when you don’t have a bottle of Champagne on hand, the result is a refreshing and elegant drink that’s perfect for toasting on special occasions. Garnish with a lemon twist or a sprig of rosemary for an added touch of sophistication.
Another crowd-pleasing white wine cocktail is the Sangria Blanco. This Spanish-inspired drink features white wine mixed with a variety of fruits, such as oranges, lemons, and peaches, along with a touch of brandy or triple sec. The result is a vibrant and flavorful beverage that’s perfect for sharing with friends and family.
To make your Sangria Blanco even more special, consider adding a splash of sparkling water or prosecco for some effervescence, or try this Sangria recipe from REWILD wines.
REWILD Pinot Grigio Sangria
Light, crisp and aromatic, this white sangria highlights the delicate character of Pinot Grigio, enhanced with floral elderflower notes and juicy overripe stone fruit. Fresh mint and sparkling club soda bring brightness and lift, making it a refreshing serve for warm summer days.
Ingredients:
- 1 bottle Rewild Wines Pinot Grigio
- 1/4 cup elderflower liqueur
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 2 cups overripe peach slices, raspberries and fresh mint
- Club soda, to top
In a large pitcher, combine Rewild Wines Pinot Grigio, elderflower liqueur and sugar. Stir until dissolved. Add overripe peaches, raspberries and mint, and mix gently. Chill for 1–2 hours. Top with club soda before serving.
For Rewild, this simple approach to using overripe fruit aligns with a broader commitment to sustainability across every part of its production, rooted in regeneration.
I love that fact that the brand focuses on farming and winemaking practices that support healthier soils, improved biodiversity and reduced environmental impact, with a philosophy that extends naturally to how its wines can be enjoyed at home.
