The Greeks got it right, your diet should be your way of life

When you hear the word ‘diet,’ do you think about drinking nasty green smoothies, counting calories and not being allowed to enjoy your favourite foods?  Well, you shouldn’t because the word diet comes from the Greek word diata. It means ‘a way of life’ and it’s the key to a healthy diet.

I was so happy to learn this because what we eat should be our way of life, not a short-term fad, as so many people think a diet is. When you commit to eating a mainly healthy diet, you can treat yourself and stay fit and healthy. Balance is key with everything in life, especially how we eat.

The greatest wealth is health

Clean eating is key to a healthy diet

Reaching your weight loss goals or maintaining your current, healthy weight depends largely on what you eat. There’s a saying in the fitness industry that “Abs are made in the kitchen and not the gym.” It’s true.

Whether or not you desire a 6-pack, healthy eating creates the basis for living a healthy lifestyle. This is why many of us in the fitness industry refer to our healthy lifestyle as ‘clean eating.’ This describes exactly what your ‘diet’ should consist of, clean eats.

Having a large salad is a great way to eat healthy while travelling

Clean eating

Since clean eating is the key to a healthy diet, what’s the best way to eat clean? Shop the perimeter at the grocery store and stock up on fruits and veggies; avoid the middle aisles that are stocked full of processed and junk foods, and limit fat-and-calorie-laden restaurant meals as often as possible by cooking at home.

Healthy travel habits

It’s easy to fall off the bandwagon while on vacation. Utilizing these healthy eating travel tips can help you to stay on track. The key to maintaining a healthy diet is planning. It is possible to have a fun and enjoyable vacation without packing on a few extra pounds.

When deciding how to choose the best all-inclusive resort, don’t let the buffet scare you. Not all resorts. have specialty restaurants, but buffet food can be healthy too. Walk the perimeter and see all of the available food options before you begin filing your plate. Once you have seen everything, you can make a conscious decision about what to put on your plate.

Everything in moderation

Above all else, enjoy what you eat because food is what fuels your body. It’s amazing how much better you feel after a ‘clean’ meal as opposed to a ‘cheat’ meal. I rarely eat fast-food meals anymore. I can’t stand the way they make me feel for the rest of the day.

Chocolate lava cake dessert

For me, a treat has to be worth the calories, and something that weighs me down just isn’t. However, give me a molten chocolate lava cake for dessert and now we’re talking!

Conclusion – the key to a healthy diet

Life is far too precious to avoid treats altogether, it’s got to be about moderation and finding a balance. Our diet should be our way of life. Moderation, not starvation. Eat what you want to eat, but be smart about it. Have dessert, but start with a salad.
