In a word, Nemacolin is magical. Imagine entering the most luxurious place and being treated like royalty while surrounded by whimsy and extravagance. Now, imagine that all of this luxury is devoid of the pretentiousness that often accompanies 5-star experiences. This is what spending time at Nemacolin Resort and Spa is really like.

Affectionately called a billionaire’s playground, Nemacolin is the ultimate playground for kids of all ages, including the child within each and every one of us. Nestled amidst breathtaking scenery, this resort offers a unique blend of world-class accommodations and thrilling outdoor experiences. It’s unlike anything I’ve seen anywhere else in the world.

Location and History of Nemacolin Spa and Resort

Located in the Laurel Highlands of Pennsylvania

Nemacolin is located in the picturesque Laurel Highlands region of southwestern Pennsylvania. This stunning area is renowned for its rolling hills, lush forests, and vibrant wildlife, making it a perfect backdrop for a luxurious getaway.

Located just 70 miles southeast of Pittsburgh, the resort is easily accessible. It offers guests a quick and easy escape from city life. The resort’s prime location allows visitors to immerse themselves in the natural beauty of the region while enjoying a wealth of recreational opportunities. And by a wealth of activities, I mean over 350 activities! But more about those in a minute.

How Nemacolin Came to Be

The resort has a rich history that dates back to the 1960s. Before it became the resort it is today, Willard F. Rockwell purchased an initial 60 acres in 1949. In 1968, he created what is now known as The Grand Lodge. Having undergone major renovations, The Grand Lodge continues to welcome guests today.

In 1987, the late Joseph A. Hardy III purchased a large portion of this land and began building what we know today as Nemacolin. The vision of its founder was to create a place where guests could experience both relaxation and adventure amid the stunning landscapes of Pennsylvania. Under the leadership of his daughter Maggie, that vision has come to life.

Over the years, the resort has undergone significant expansions and renovations, enhancing its accommodations and amenities, which now include a variety of lodging options, fine dining experiences, and an array of outdoor activities.

The entire Nemacolin Resort and Spa recently underwent a $500 million renovation. I can attest to what an incredible job they did. No detail was overlooked.

To eliminate the need for single-use plastic water bottles, they have refilling stations around the resort. I wish more hotels did this instead of charging guests $6 for a bottle of water. Not only is it a waste of money, but it’s terrible for the environment. As a responsible traveller, I always bring my own water bottle.

Children are not allowed to stay or dine at Falling Rock, ensuring the most relaxing stay for its adult guests.

The Estates – for larger groups

For those looking for the ultimate private getaway, The Estates are just the place. A resort within a resort, The Estates can accommodate up to 22 guests. Each of The Estates has its own vibe and surprises, including firepits, hot tubs, and game rooms. You’ll need a week just to explore your Estate.

Lautrec

I had the pleasure of dining at Lautrec in The Chateau and it was one of the best meals of my life. At Lautrec, they take fine dining to another level. Seated in a luxurious room surrounded by first-print lithographs by artist Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, they set the stage to impress.

Our five-course meal was artfully plated and each bite was somehow better than the last Each course was expertly paired by their Sommelier with exceptional wines.

You’ll also find indoor axe throwing, horseback riding, glow-in-the-dark cosmic bowling, paintball, laser tag, indoor obstacle courses, and the list goes on and on. With nearly an activity a day for a year, you are sure to find activities you’ll love at Nemacolin Resort and Spa.

Shepherd’s Rock is said to be both fun and challenging, which means it would be the course for me if I ever decided to golf at Nemacolin.
