It’s. no secret that I’m a huge fan of Mexico, I write about it a lot! Being a total water baby, I miss its warm ocean waters and freshwater cenotes. Tulum, in the Mayan Riviera in Mexico, is my favourite area to explore. Nestled along Mexico’s stunning Caribbean coast, snorkeling in Tulum offers a unique opportunity to explore its crystal-clear turquoise waters and discover an abundance of vibrant marine life.
When you immerse yourself in the warm Caribbean Sea, you’ll be surrounded by colourful fish, curious sea turtles, and even the occasional stingray. As you glide through the calm waters, you’ll witness nature’s hidden wonders unfold before your eyes. And it’s pretty darn amazing.
But Tulum’s underwater beauty doesn’t end with its coral reefs. Venture into my fave place to go – its cenotes. Cenotes are ancient sinkholes filled with clear fresh water. These natural formations provide a different kind of snorkeling experience, where you’ll have the opportunity to explore underwater caves, swim amidst stalactites, and feel the serenity of this underground paradise.

Before embarking on your snorkeling adventure in Tulum, it’s important to ensure you have the right equipment and are aware of the necessary safety precautions. A well-fitting mask and snorkel are essential for a comfortable and enjoyable experience. There’s nothing worse than a leaky mask, trust me on this one Ugh, it’s the worst!
Make sure the mask creates a tight seal around your face to prevent water from entering. Be sure to choose a snorkel that allows for easy breathing. I love my new full-face snorkel, pictured above. It makes breathing so much easier. And it never fogs up.
While I don’t wear them, it’s a personal choice, wearing fins can enhance your swimming abilities and reduce fatigue. As a former lifeguard, I am a very strong swimmer and my preference is to swim without fins but you may like them so give them a go! I prefer to wear water shoes when I’m swimming in Mexico.
Best time to go snorkeling in Tulum
It’s always the best time to visit Tulum, lol! Tulum’s climate makes it an ideal snorkeling destination year-round, but there are certain times that offer the best conditions for underwater exploration. The sargassum seaweed is getting worse and worse
The dry season, which runs from November to April, is generally considered the best time to go snorkeling in Tulum. This is when I tend to visit Mexico because it’s winter in Canada, making it the best time to visit Tulum. The weather is perfect and the water is warm.
During this period, the weather is sunny and the waters are calm and clear, providing excellent visibility for snorkeling. The water temperature is also pleasantly warm, making it a comfortable experience for snorkelers of all levels. I’ve always found the ocean waters to be warm in Tulum, Mexico.
During the wet season, which spans from May to October, Tulum experiences more rainfall and higher humidity. While this may deter some visitors, it’s worth noting that the wet season brings its own unique charm to snorkeling in Tulum. The increased rainfall helps maintain the vibrant colors of the coral reefs, and the occasional rain showers can add a touch of adventure to your snorkeling experience.
However, be sure to check the weather forecast and plan your snorkeling trips accordingly. If there is any chance of a storm, thunder or lightning, you want to steer clear of the water.
Top snorkeling spots in Tulum
Tulum is blessed with an abundance of top-notch snorkeling spots, each offering its own unique charm and marine life. One of the most popular snorkeling spots is the Tulum Reef, located just a short distance from the shore.
This expansive reef is teeming with a wide array of fish species, including parrotfish, sergeant majors, and damselfish. The vibrant coral formations provide a stunning backdrop as you glide through the crystal-clear waters.
Another must-visit snorkeling spot in Tulum is the Gran Cenote. This cenote is a true natural wonder, with its crystal-clear water and intricate cave system. Snorkeling in the Gran Cenote allows you to explore underwater caves, swim alongside mesmerizing stalactites, and even spot the occasional bat hanging from the cave ceiling. It’s an experience that will leave you in awe of Mother Nature’s creations.
Personally, I loved seeing the bats fly overhead, but my boyfriend hated it, lol! If you enter a cenote that is covered, you should expect to see bats. Pictured below was a cenote tour we participated in where we saw lots of bats inside this cave.

It’s also essential to use reef-safe sunscreen, as chemicals found in many conventional sunscreens can harm the coral and marine life. Look for sunscreens that are clearly marked as reef-safe. If you don’t have one, you can opt to wear a rash guard to protect your skin from the sun.
When snorkeling in the cenotes, respect the environment by refraining from disturbing the sediments on the cenote floor. These sediments play an important role in maintaining the clarity of the water and the overall health of the cenote ecosystem.
