A Better Night’s Sleep is Possible

Do you suffer from tossing and turning, struggling to fall asleep, or waking up feeling exhausted? If so, you’re not alone. Poor sleep quality can impact your overall well-being and productivity. I should know as I’ve had trouble sleeping for most of my life. Thankfully, I recently discovered red light therapy for sleep.

Red light therapy, also known as low-level light therapy, uses specific wavelengths of red light to penetrate deep into your cells, helping to improve sleep quality and regulate your body’s natural sleep-wake cycle.

Not only does red light therapy support quality sleep, but it also has numerous other benefits. We’ll get to its many benefits and the science behind them further down in this post. First, we’re going to answer the question you came here to find out – does red light therapy for sleep actually work?

Helight Sleep Review – My Personal Experience

Does red light help you sleep? In my personal experience, yes it does! Below is my detailed review, but don’t just take it from me. Further down in this post, we’re also going to check out the science behind it so you don’t think it’s just woo-woo nonsense. (PSST: Helight Sleep was inspired by NASA so it’s definitely not woo-woo.)

First, a bit about me. I have been a terrible sleeper my entire life. Yes, my entire life. As a young child, I used to get out of bed and randomly fall asleep in the hallway most nights. My poor parents 😣

As an adult, I often suffered from insomnia, simply telling people that I was a night owl and that’s why I was awake at 2 am. I bought an expensive bed and sheets, which helped a little, but never truly solved my problem.

Enter Helight Sleep’s red light device. I’ll admit that I was skeptical that a red light-emitting device could actually help me sleep, but I was certainly willing to give it a try.

It can take 21 days for your body to adjust and for it to work so I committed to a full three weeks of using it every night to see what would happen. I didn’t make it easy on Helight either because six days into my experiment, I flew to Europe.

The first three nights I used Helight, I was staying in a hotel. On the first night, it didn’t help me fall asleep any faster or stay asleep longer. I was still in the same time zone at this point, but I often don’t sleep as well in hotels as I do at home. But I knew it could take 3 weeks, so I kept using it every night.

How Helight Sleep Red Light Therapy Helped Me Avoid Jet Lag

I knew that the ultimate test would be seeing if it could help me to combat the negative effects of jet lag. There is an eight-hour time difference between Vancouver and Spain and jet lag usually ruins the first couple of days of my trip.

I used my Helight the first night in Spain and I will admit that I had to use it twice, meaning it ran for two cycles of 28 minutes before I fell asleep, but then I slept the entire night. Yes, the entire night.

On my first night in Europe, I got a full night’s sleep and was able to get up and spend a wonderful afternoon and evening with a girlfriend. I didn’t even feel tired during the day. No jet lag whatsoever. At this point, I was nine days into my experiment and I was already hooked!

The key takeaway here is that yes, Helight Sleep does work but it may not work immediately. The very first night I used it, I didn’t fall asleep before it turned off so I pushed the button a second time for an additional 28-minute cycle. They say it can take up to three weeks, but for me, it was nine days and working like a charm.

If you have an International trip coming up, I would recommend using Helight Sleep for a week or two before your trip to help increase its effectiveness against jet lag. Since everyone is different, I can’t guarantee it’ll work for you after nine days. It may take the full three weeks.

Patience is key, but it’s worth it. It didn’t take the full 21 days for my body to adjust and for it to work for me, even with jet lag thrown into the mix. Helight Kidzzz is also available for those of you who have children that suffer from sleep disorders. It is 100% natural and safe for use with children.

How to Use Helight Sleep

Turn off all light sources in the bedroom and place Helight Sleep near the bed on your nightstand. Press the red button to start the timed protocol which will transform the entire bedroom into a soothing environment. I quite enjoy the soft red glow it emits across the room.

Close your eyes and get in your usual sleeping position. The 630-nanometer wavelength will pass through your eyelids and signal your brain to relax and sleep. I am very light-sensitive and it does not bother me. I often have to cover LED lights in hotel rooms, but this red glow is soothing.

After 14 minutes, the light intensity will gradually fade and will turn completely off after 28 minutes. Unlike blue light, which signals the brain to stay awake and alert, this 28-minute patented protocol mirrors the natural cycle of light at the end of the day (i.e., sunset), creating a biological signal to your brain that it’s time to go to sleep and start melatonin secretion.

Its portable design and integrated battery make it perfect for travel, curbing jet lag by helping reduce the period of adaptation to a new time zone. As you can see below, it fits in the palm of my hand. I have travelled with my Helight several times now and it takes up almost no space at all in my suitcase.

Understanding the Science Behind It

Now for the technical science part. Red light therapy uses specific wavelengths of red light to penetrate deep into your cells, helping to improve sleep quality and regulate your body’s natural sleep-wake cycle. But how exactly does it work?

To understand the benefits of red light therapy for sleep, it’s important to grasp the science behind it. By stimulating the production of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) in your cells, red light therapy enhances mitochondrial function, reduces oxidative stress, and promotes relaxation.

It also activates the release of endorphins and serotonin, helping you feel calm and ready for a restful sleep. This results in a calming effect on the body, setting the stage for a restful night’s sleep.

The product I tried, Helight Sleep, pioneers a new frontier in sleep aid solutions, diffusing 630 nanometers of pure red light. Its scientifically-based protocol gradually fades out in 28 minutes signalling your brain to relax, release melatonin, and go to sleep. And it works!

Helight Sleep and Helight Kidzzz were developed by a renowned French sleep disorder expert. The patented protocol has been proven to enhance falling asleep faster and achieving deep sleep.

Their NASA-inspired, award-winning patented technology helps you to fall asleep faster, and sleep better and deeper. It is the result of 3 years of research and development using data from the most recent studies on the effect of light on sleep and was achieved with the help of a scientific committee comprised of a sleep disorder expert, a medical physicist and a Ph.D. in cognitive sciences.

Benefits of Red Light Therapy

Not only does red light therapy support quality sleep, but it also has numerous other benefits. One major advantage is its anti-inflammatory properties. Inflammation can lead to sleep disturbances, and red light therapy can help reduce inflammation in various parts of the body, promoting better sleep.

Additionally, red light therapy accelerates the healing process. Whether you’re recovering from an injury or simply dealing with sore muscles, red light therapy can aid in tissue repair and reduce pain, allowing you to sleep more comfortably.

Another significant benefit of red light therapy is its positive impact on mood. By activating the release of endorphins and serotonin, red light therapy helps combat stress and anxiety, creating the environment for a calm and peaceful sleep.

How Red Light Therapy Promotes Better Sleep

Red light therapy works by regulating your body’s natural sleep-wake cycle, also known as the circadian rhythm. Exposure to red light in the evening helps increase melatonin production, the hormone responsible for making you feel sleepy.

You may have heard of taking melatonin at bedtime. With a red light, your body creates its own so you don’t need to take it. By aligning your body’s internal clock with the external environment, red light therapy helps improve sleep quality and duration.

In addition to regulating the circadian rhythm, red light therapy also helps balance other hormones involved in sleep. It reduces the production of cortisol, the stress hormone that can interfere with sleep while increasing the production of serotonin, the neurotransmitter that promotes relaxation and a sense of well-being.

Furthermore, red light therapy improves sleep by reducing sleep disturbances caused by pain and inflammation. By targeting the affected areas, red light therapy can alleviate discomfort, making it easier for you to fall asleep and stay asleep throughout the night.

Additional Techniques for Better Sleep

While red light therapy devices offer a convenient solution for sleep improvement, there are also other techniques you can incorporate into your evening routine to enhance the benefits.

One technique is to use red light therapy in combination with other relaxation practices, such as deep breathing exercises or meditation. This can help you unwind and prepare your body for a restful night’s sleep. Instead of trying to use a one-size-fits-all approach, why not combine several different ones?

Another technique is to create a sleep-friendly environment by minimizing exposure to blue light, which can disrupt your circadian rhythm. This means putting your phone away before bedtime instead of mindlessly scrolling social media. The blue light our phones emit can keep us awake.

Red Light Therapy vs Other Sleep Aids

When it comes to improving sleep, many people turn to sleep aids such as medications or supplements. I have certainly used melatonin when travelling to help combat the effects of jet lag, but it can leave you feeling groggy in the morning.

Red light therapy offers a natural and non-invasive alternative that can be just as effective, if not more so. I found that it really and truly helped me to avoid jet lag when I flew from Vancouver to Spain.

Unlike sleep medications, which can have side effects and the risk of dependency, red light therapy has minimal (if any at all) side effects and is generally safe for most individuals. It’s a non-pharmacological approach that works with your body’s natural processes to promote better sleep.

Additionally, red light therapy addresses the root causes of sleep disturbances, such as inflammation, stress, and hormonal imbalances. This holistic approach sets it apart from other sleep aids that merely mask the symptoms without addressing the underlying issues.

For me, this was the number one reason I was interested in trying Helight Sleep. I would much rather take a holistic approach to my wellness than depend on taking medication, even melatonin, wherever possible. Combatting jet lag just became as simple as turning on my Helight – how amazing is that?!
