Wellness 7 dimensions explained
Wellness is often thought of as simply being healthy, but it’s much more than that. It’s about finding balance in all aspects of your life and taking care of yourself on a holistic level. There are 7 dimensions of wellness, each one playing a vital role in your overall well-being.
Physical wellness: Tips for a healthy body
Physical wellness is all about taking care of your body. This includes things like eating a healthy diet, getting regular exercise, and getting enough sleep. When you take care of your body, you feel better both physically and mentally. Here are some tips for improving your physical wellness:
- Eat a healthy diet: Focus on whole foods like fruits, vegetables, lean protein, and whole grains. Limit processed foods, sugar, and alcohol. I find the easiest way to accomplish this is to shop the perimeter at the grocery store. This way, you’ll avoid the cookie aisle and other processed foods.
- Exercise regularly: Aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise most days of the week. This can be anything from a brisk walk to a yoga class to weightlifting. The key to making exercise a part of your daily life is to find something you enjoy doing!
- Get enough sleep: Sleep is vital to our overall health. You should aim for 7-9 hours of sleep each night. Create a bedtime routine to help you wind down and prepare for rest. If you aren’t sleeping well at night, try and take a quick nap during the day.

Emotional wellness: Managing stress and building resilience
Emotional wellness is all about taking care of your mental health. This includes managing stress, building resilience, and finding ways to cope with difficult emotions. Here are some tips for improving your emotional wellness:
- Practice mindfulness: Mindfulness is a powerful tool for managing stress and building resilience. Try meditation, deep breathing, or simply focusing on the present moment. If you struggle with meditation as I do, try an app like the Calm app that guides you through it.
- Build a support system: Having a network of supportive friends and family members can help you cope with difficult emotions and life’s challenges. Talk to a therapist if you need to. I have one and highly recommend getting therapy when you need extra support.
- Practice self-care: Self-care is essential for emotional wellness. This can be anything from taking a bubble bath to going for a walk to practicing yoga. It can also be saying no to an event you don’t want to attend. Your time is yours and yours alone, guard it and be selective with who you share your energy with.

Intellectual wellness: Cultivating creativity and lifelong learning
Intellectual wellness is all about keeping your brain active and engaged. This includes things like learning new things, exploring new ideas, and pursuing creative hobbies. Here are some tips for improving your intellectual wellness:
- Read regularly: Reading is a great way to keep your mind sharp and explore new ideas. Try reading a variety of genres, from fiction to non-fiction to poetry. If you dislike reading, try listening to a podcast or audiobook instead.
- Pursue a creative hobby: Engaging in a creative hobby like painting, writing, or playing music can help you tap into your creativity and improve your intellectual wellness.
- Learn something new: Whether it’s taking a class or learning a new language, learning new things can keep your brain active and engaged. Even something as simple as doing a crossword or wordle helps stimulate your brain and keep you sharp.

Social wellness: Building and maintaining meaningful relationships
Social wellness is all about building and maintaining meaningful relationships with others. This includes things like spending time with friends and family, participating in social activities, and volunteering in your community. Here are some tips for improving your social wellness:
- Connect with others: Make an effort to connect with others on a regular basis. This can be anything from having a coffee date with a friend to attending a social event. It can also be taking the time to use the sauna after a fitness class and chatting with others.
- Join a club or organization: Joining a club or organization can help you meet new people and build meaningful relationships. When I joined a new gym and started doing a regular weekly yoga class, I made several new friends.
- Volunteer in your community: Volunteering is a great way to give back to your community and meet like-minded individuals.

Environmental wellness: Creating a sustainable and healthy environment
Environmental wellness is all about creating a sustainable and healthy environment for yourself and those around you. This includes things like reducing your environmental footprint, creating a healthy living space, and spending time in nature. Here are some tips for improving your environmental wellness:
- Reduce your environmental footprint: Make an effort to reduce your use of resources like water and electricity. Consider switching to more eco-friendly products and reducing waste. When I travel, I always bring my water bottle and to-go cup with me. I detest single-use plastics. We only have one earth 🌍
- Create a healthy living space: Make your home a healthy and welcoming environment by decluttering, adding plants, and using natural cleaning products. If you don’t have any plants, take it from me, they made a huge difference!
- Spend time in nature: Spending time in nature can help reduce stress and improve your overall well-being. Make an effort to spend time outside each day, whether it’s taking a walk or simply sitting in a park.
Pro tip: one of my favourite ways to cultivate environmental wellness is forest bathing. The best part? It’s also a fantastic form of emotional wellness and an act of self-care. That’s multi-tasking at its finest 😉

Occupational wellness: Finding fulfillment in your work
This is probably the most challenging of the 7 dimensions of wellness. Finding a job you like isn’t easy, I know, but it’s definitely worth it. If you aren’t happy where you are, take steps to find a new job. Update your resume and LinkedIn profile, search job boards and apply until you succeed.
Occupational wellness is all about finding fulfillment in your work and achieving a healthy work-life balance. This includes things like pursuing a career you’re passionate about, setting healthy boundaries, and taking breaks when needed. Here are some tips for improving your occupational wellness:
- Pursue a career you’re passionate about: Finding work that you’re passionate about can help you feel fulfilled and satisfied in your career.
- Take breaks when needed: Taking breaks throughout the workday can help you feel more refreshed and productive. Try taking a walk outside or simply stepping away from your desk for a few minutes.
- Set healthy boundaries: It’s important to set healthy boundaries between work and home life. This can include things like turning off your phone after work hours or taking a break from email on the weekends.

Spiritual wellness: Exploring your values and beliefs
Spiritual wellness is all about exploring your values and beliefs and finding meaning and purpose in your life. This includes things like practicing gratitude, exploring your spirituality, and finding ways to give back to others. Here are some tips for improving your spiritual wellness:
- Practice gratitude: Taking time each day to reflect on what you’re grateful for can help you feel more connected to your values and beliefs. It can help to journal and write down a few things you are grateful for every morning.
- Explore your spirituality: Whether it’s through prayer, meditation, or simply spending time in nature, exploring your spirituality can help you find meaning and purpose in your life.
- Give back to others: Giving back to others can help you feel more connected to your community and to something greater than yourself.
