Humpbacks are known to migrate through these waters and are often spotted breaching and tail-slapping. This was what I was truly. hoping to witness first-hand. And as you can see below, I did!

We went on our tour at the beginning of October and we saw tons of whales! Of course, there is never a guarantee since they are wild animals. However, you can increase your chances of spotting these magnificent animals if you go during certain months.
While whale watching is possible year-round in Victoria, certain times of the year offer better chances of spotting these magnificent creatures. The peak whale watching season typically runs from April to October. This is when the waters are warmer and more abundant with food for the whales.
During this time, the resident orca population is most active, providing ample opportunities to observe their natural behaviour. Humpback whales can also be spotted during this season, as they make their way along the coast during their migration.
However, it is important to note that nature can be unpredictable, and sightings cannot be guaranteed. If you’re planning a trip solely for whale watching, it is advisable to check with local tour operators or consult whale sighting reports to increase your chances of a successful and rewarding experience.

Orca Spirit Adventures Whale Watching Tour Boat
There are a few different popular whale-watching tour operators in Victoria, BC. I went on my tour with Orca Spirit Adventures and I highly recommend them! The staff was friendly and entertaining and they made sure that everyone was having a good time.
Pictured above is the comfortable indoor seating we enjoyed onboard Orca Spirit Adventures. When we were cruising, we mainly stayed inside until the captain or another staff member announced a whale sighting. We saw several orcas and a humpback whale during our tour.
This way, we could stay warm and dry during our 3-hour whale watching tour in Victoria, BC. While we did spend some time outside under their covered seating area, it was too cold to sit out there for the duration of our tour.
As you can see from my images, it was a rather cold and rainy day. It wasn’t the ideal day for a boat tour but we didn’t let that dampen our spirits – and neither did the staff. They made sure that hot coffee and hot chocolate were readily available.
